Photographic Catalogue of the Bird Collection
The bird collection is undoubtedly one of the fundamental sections of the Regional Museum of Artà. The striking appearance of this faunal group, together with the fact that there is a significant degree of popular knowledge about birds, means that this section of the Museum has always been one of the most interesting for visitors.
That is why, at the end of 2005, we decided to create a photographic catalogue of the bird collection, with the dual aim of having a fixed record of the state of the collection at that time and, on the other hand, of making it easier to consult the collection, even remotely.
The state of mounting and preservation of the specimens is very varied. Some specimens look truly magnificent, while others were mounted less successfully or have suffered degradation over time. The images reflect the state of the collection between September 2005 and February 2006, when the photographs were taken. The total number of specimens photographed is 251 (736 images), corresponding to 120 species. Photographs of some highly degraded specimens are not included.
The structure of the photographic catalogue is very simple. Each species can be searched by its common or scientific name. For each species, the different specimens in the collection will appear, with the different images taken for each of them. Clicking on the thumbnail will open the image at medium size, and clicking on it will download the full-size image. Additionally, the collection catalogue is also included here, in the form of a database, providing more information on each piece.
Finally, the authors of this simple catalogue wish to express our sincerest gratitude to Jaume Cabrer, secretary of the Museum Board, Joan Garcias, president of the Museum Board, and Irene Cabrer, manager of the Museum, thanks to whose support this work has been possible.
