Humanized Zones of Artà

Many species of birds have been able to adapt and at the same time benefit from human action. Urban areas provide good protection against predators, and agricultural areas offer a significant availability of food. Some species such as jays, falcons and sparrows are very typical of towns, and many others (goldfinches, starlings, sebellins, titmice, …) occupy orchards, hedgerows, tree crops and seedbeds. Many of these birds eat insects or rodents, and for this reason they are good allies of the farmer, but they are also very sensitive to the use of pesticides.

Humanized areas of Artà and their role for birds

In Artà, the urban environment and the inhabited centers form a mosaic of landscapes where human activity coexists with nature. The municipality combines a historic center, small urbanizations and rural areas with the presence of Mediterranean vegetation.

These spaces are not alien to biodiversity: many birds adapt to living near towns, taking advantage of buildings, gardens and agricultural areas as part of their habitat. In the context of Artà, where much of the territory preserves protected natural and landscape values, this transition between the urban and the natural is especially relevant.
